Welcome to Insightful Animals
A supportive space for pet parents looking to build stronger bonds with their pets and find hope while addressing their dog's or cat's behavior problems. Written by Dr. Kelly C. Ballantyne, DVM,DACVB.
Why I’m starting this now
One thing has been abundantly clear during my career as a veterinary behaviorist: there are way more pet parents seeking help (and hope) than we veterinary behaviorists will ever be able to help directly.
Behavior problems, frequently rooted in fear, anxiety, and distress, are so common in our dogs and cats. While it’s possible to find great advice on how to address these issues on social media and the broader internet, that great advice is easily lost in the fog of misinformation. I’m here to share what I know of science-based behavior change, the information that thousands of my clients have found most helpful while managing a range of behavioral issues (often quite serious and life threatening), as well as what we’re learning about pet caregiver burden. Yes, that is a thing, it affects most of my clients, and if you’re here it might be affecting you too.
Our community values are kindness, growth-mindset, and non-judgment
If these values resonate with you, please join us. While we may not agree with everything a community member has done in the past to address their pet’s behavior, we understand that everyone is doing the best they can with the tools and information they have. We’ve all done things with our pets that we have regretted, and we are all always learning. This includes me. Someday I’ll have to tell you how I trained my wonderful German Shepherd, Ian, and my lovely Quarter Horse, Ellie.
What to expect
Free subscribers will get access to the weekly newsletter where I review information and tips my clients have found most helpful when addressing behavior problems, as well as things I want every pet parent to know.
Paid subscribers will have access to:
Exclusive posts where I take you on deep dives into specific topics chosen by the community
A monthly Q & A where I answer your most pressing questions
Please note that I am a licensed veterinarian in Illinois and therefore cannot provide your pet with a diagnosis, prognosis, or recommend specific treatments unless we have met in person. All advice is meant to be general (which can be extremely helpful) but you should always check with your pet’s vet.
If any of this sounds interesting or supportive to you on your journey with your pet, please subscribe below.
I’m so happy you’re here.
